What is to be multilingual?

Mar 23, 2017 | Successful

Well, I could start by saying that to be a multilingual means you will not be so sure about your native language anymore. No, maybe I could say that you will not even realize in which language you are receiving an information, because you just understand it. Or you will start talking with an English speaker in Spanish because you were texting somebody in Spanish and your brain could not switch again in time. I will just start by saying that to be a multilingual is great. Let’s analyze a bit more about the positive aspects.

4 features that show that you are multilingual
  1. You have a huge competitive advantage when it comes to finding a job. Nowadays, it is extremely important to be able to communicate internationally, and many businesses are opening the contact with foreign companies. The more languages you can talk, the more the company will be happy to welcome you, as you can cover more than one single market. But be careful please: if you know 3 words in another language or your cousin’s wife is from Spain and you understand something when he speaks Spanish, it does not mean that you are allowed to write on your CV that you know this language!
  2. When you travel, you can easily understand all the information you need and you can ask if you have a specific need. The most important thing is that you are able to communicate with every member of the society you are in.
  3. You can easily learn more languages coming from the same “language family” as your brain is more elastic. Furthermore, you can easily recognize the same word in another similar language.
  4. You can meet and talk with many people coming from different countries. You will be surprised how easy it reduces the cultural barriers, as you realize that even if you come from the opposite side of the world, you can understand each other, express your own ideas and explore different points of view!

Definitely, there will be moments when you are the personal translator between your friends and somebody who does not speak the language, but this is also fun!
I strongly recommend everyone: go abroad and learn a new language, it is the best thing you can do today!
